The Stronger Christchurch Infrastructure Rebuild Team (SCIRT) is charged with repairing hundreds of kilometres of roads, foot and road bridges, underground services (water, wastewater and storm water pipes), parks and water reservoirs that were damaged in Canterbury's earthquakes.  Downer New Zealand Limited is part of the SRIRT and a significant contractor in the Civil Infrastructure Industry in New Zealand. With an already established Earthquake Team in place from the initial Christchurch quake we are looking to support our existing resources for this work and the large increase in project work for other customers. We have a number of roles currently available in Christchurch in the South Island of New Zealand of varying project duration. The following four roles are the current critical roles however please browse our website for a complete overview of all available roles at Downer.

1) Project Manager: This role is important to the overall success of the Downer operations in Christchurch. Reporting to the Project Director, you will nurture and enhance client relationships, whilst having a natural talent for building our business.

2) Project Engineer: As a key part of our technical team you will report to the Project Manager.  Your key role will involve providing technical advice on all engineering requirements within the project.  You will be assisting the Project Manager with day to day operations, project documentation and contractual issues

3) Site Engineer: Your days will be busy and varied, so a flexible attitude is essential!  Your role as a site based person will be to manage all aspects of the civil and structural operation reporting directly to the Project Engineer.  You will have the opportunity to develop and maintain strong client relationships, liaise with the public and prepare progress and claim reports. You will also have a quality and safety ethos and perform audits and checks to ensure compliance with Health & Safety, quality and environmental policies.

4) Superintendents/Supervisors: The successful applicant will play a crucial role in achieving project targets. This person will be the eyes and ears on site and will be responsible for making the work happen. The Superintendent will have strong working relationships with the Project Manager, Site Engineer, Foreperson and Subcontractors to help the work flow smoothly.

1) Project Manager

  • 10-15 years experience on major infrastructure projects
  • Relevant tertiary qualifications
  • Solid leadership experience
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Sound administration and financial abilities
  • Experience with, and a strong commitment to health and safety initiatives

2) Project Engineer

As a key part of our technical team you will report to the Project Manager.  Your key role will involve providing technical advice on all engineering requirements within the project.  You will be assisting the Project Manager with day to day operations, project documentation and contractual issues.

  • 10 years experience in a senior engineering position
  • Relevant tertiary qualifications
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Sound administration and financial abilities
  • Experience with, and a strong commitment to health and safety initiatives

3) Site Engineer

  • Have a BE qualification or Diploma in Civil Engineering (or equivalent)
  • At least 2 years proven practical experience in a contracting environment
  • Work well in a team environment
  • Excellent problem solving ability
  • Strong work ethic
  • A good health and safety related track record
  • A current, full drivers license is essential

4) Superintendents/Supervisors

Downer NZ is one of New Zealand's leading contractors, with a reputation for innovation and business excellence. Due to the recent Christchurch earthquakes, Downer have established a dedicated Earthquake re-build team, who are committed to re-building and constructing a new, stronger Christchurch in New Zealand.  As the project team gears up, they are now seeking an experienced Superintendent to join this already strong team.

The successful applicant will play a crucial role in achieving project targets. This person will be the eyes and ears on site and will be responsible for making the work happen. The Superintendent will have strong working relationships with the Project Manager, Site Engineer, Foreperson and Subcontractors to help the work flow smoothly.

  • Major civil construction practical experience
  • Subcontractor management skills
  • Experience of driving site performance and delivery to programme ĘC ie: Results driven!
  • Leadership and team management skills
  • Excellent problem solving abilities in order to work around "road blocks"
  • The ability to promote an environment which supports Downer's philosophy of health and safety in the workplace
